I hate the dealer this truck is at, but I love the looks of the truck. I may go look at it today.

It’s only 2WD but we have the CX-5 for snow driving.

$2500 seems like a pretty good price even with the mileage.  I can’t imagine finding one that looks that clean anywhere on the east coast for anything short of 5k at least.

Nice price. That gen truck is just so bad though.

I have the unpopular opinion that trucks should just be 4WD as standard. I’d rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. Our work trucks are 2WD and there have been many situations in which I have needed it.

I like the TRX-esque wheel design.

I thin k the most worrisome part of these was the crash tests.

I grew up in an ‘01 Expedition that did 260k miles between my dad and my brother. Shat a transmission under warranty and never had to replace another major service item until it was sold to presumably go down to Mexico and continue its life.

I don’t know anyone who has actually owned one of these that has had the problems that the people who haven’t owned them complain of. Buy it, drive it until it’s dead.

Weight and proper tires and this truck will go everywhere your CX-5 will.

There is nothing wrong with this gen truck* , any common problems with these are massively over exaggerated. There are countless trucks of this gen with 250k+ trouble free miles. What you want to avoid is the generation after these.

*except for the moderate overlap crash, these are very bad at that.

S eriously, why a truck? In my mind t hey guzzle gas, handle like a boat. and in t erms of utility, I dont need to haul anything every day. Buying a truck seems financially irresponsible

Eeeeh. Personally I think they’re ugly. The front ends are definitely on the weak side. The engine choices suck because you get spark plug hell, mediocrity, and “don’t even bother”. The 4x4 is... serviceable? Much improved by replacing the vacuum crap with a push/pull cable. I hate the interiors. Every GMT400 I’ve been in has somehow held up better than a 10th gen F150 and those are huge turds.

meh.

Looks are subjective I guess, I happen to think they’re one of the better looking trucks Ford has made. Spark plug problems are blown way out of proportion and are usually caused by improper torque, if you’re having plug problems either find a better mechanic or learn to use a torque wrench. Plus they’re not that hard or expensive to fix if it does happen. Engines aren’t great by modern standards but were more than competitive for the time. Never had an issue with my front end, ball joints every 100k or so? Was the 4x4 in the earlier ones vacuum? Because my ‘99 is electric I believe and I’ve never had an issue with it . Interior is subjective as well, I agree that the pre facelift interior is much uglier than the ‘99 and later. Maybe I’m biased because I’ve had one for so long. No disagreements with the GMT 400, (except some of the earlier interior designs, wooof), but the GMT800 which is really what these competed with were far worse in terms of durability.

In the end we like what we like, but that doesn’t mean these were bad trucks.

This is one generation of truck I’ll always steer clear of. The styling is what it is, and the interior is awful. It’s pure misery to work on, it’ll drink gas and give out zero power. The 4.6 is known for its lack of low end grunt so it’s the opposite of what you want for a truck. I don’t know why the ‘04-’08 trucks get a bad rap... They're 10 times the truck these ever were.

Not sure. I spent a lot of time in a ‘97 “Flareside” extended cab lariat and it was vacuum and that truck was just a massive pile of garbage. Never failed to fail.

Given my e-series experience, I’d guess o2 sensors instead. Almost none of my Ford vans ever needed cats, and they were mostly 200k  -  300 k miles.

Me neither , all I know is that my ‘99 has served me very well and is still going strong at 210k miles. The interior is in great shape and the rest of the truck has held up very well. Not that it hasn’t had problems, but everything it’s needed has been maintenance items (apart from the exhaust manifolds).

‘97 was the first year of these as well so maybe that was part of it. I agree though that the ‘97 and ‘98's were pretty ugly, I think the facelift did the truck a lot of good and the later trucks with slightly larger wheels are some of my favorite trucks ever.

I know these aren’t the most loved F-150 out there, but I fell in love with these when my dad bought one when I was ten years old. He brought me along on all of the test drives he went on, and when he picked the truck I liked the most (because it was that awesome ‘90's metallic teal color) I felt it was just as much my truck as it was his. I basically grew up in the back seat of that tiny extended cab going on family trips, and our yearly fishing trip to Canada. I t was the first vehicle I ever drove. I started driving it regularly in high school after my first car shit a transmission and so it was the first vehicle I ever “ customized” as well. I t handled so many trips to the lake with friends, hauling crappy race cars, and all sorts of project vehicles. I took it off to college where I could barely afford to keep it full of gas. It’s been there from my first job, to my first career, my first girlfriend to my wife, and in a couple of months my first kid. So yeah, I’ve developed a love for these over the years, possibly bordering on an unhealthy obsession.
